Curated, bespoke, tailored, one-of-one, coachbuilt, artisanal – automakers have been dusting off their thesauruses to find the perfect word for their customization programs. The ability to personalize your vehicle with special paints and embroidered leathers is on the rise in the upper tier of luxury. Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Porsche have been perfecting their craft for years with their respective Bespoke, Mulliner, and Paint to Sample programs, and Range Rover is emulating them by offering their clients with the deepest pockets a chance to spend even more. They call it Range Rover by SV Bespoke.

From custom paints to embossed headrests, SV Bespoke lets you show your true colours, with the only limitation being your imagination. The ultimate curation is a few connected neurons away. Our own test vehicle, a short-wheelbase variant of the Range Rover SV, is dressed in a bespoke shade of silver. More of an intricate glossy white with a non-reflective coat, blue flakes from the lower epidermis shimmer as you get closer, and the paint looks tremendous as the sunlight fades and softens in its glow. If there’s a specific colour you have in mind like the nostalgic shade of your first car, or of a certain hue of ocean or sky, Range Rover will be happy to match it for you.

The curation isn’t limited to paint colours. There are custom embroideries and patterns available for the collection of near-aniline leathers and sustainable non-leather options. Selections of wood veneers and finishers with metal inlays, mosaics, or marquetry are popular, as well as custom treadplates that you can deboss with an inspirational motto. Crafting the ‘Range Rover’ hood badge out of 18k gold isn’t out of the question, and neither are laser-etched monograms on the dashboard. Again, the sky’s the limit.

Other than the unique silver paint, our SV Bespoke didn’t take that personalization very far, but the lustrous tone pairs well with the Light Cloud front and Cinder Grey rear interior layered with Ultrafabrics, a sustainable, leather-free polyurethane material. The entire cabin is leather-free, and these clean, lightly matted, abrasion-resistant surfaces remind us of the guilt-free, recyclable textiles used in the Volvo EX90. Elsewhere, the SV demonstrates that its cabin craftsmanship is top-tier, with a solidity to the materials as if they’ve all been carved from the same slab of wood.

Adding to its opulence, the SV employs thick interior insulation and active noise cancellation to minimize cabin noise. If you’re driving at speed and roll up the windows, you will feel the cabin seal up like a pressurized chamber. The seating position is properly elevated and upright, and the plush, thickly padded seats encourage proper posture while offering comparable comfort to a Herman Miller chair, equipped with an adjustable armrest on the right and a wide, flat window sill on your left. Adjust your winged headrests and tower over the road on your throne with superior visibility all around – that’s the Range Rover experience in a nutshell.

The SV comes exclusively with a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an 8-speed automatic gearbox sourced from BMW, generating 607 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. As you’d expect from a luxury land yacht, power comes on gently and consistently, but the SV will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds should you require it to. You can ride the throttle and let the gearbox sort itself out with invisible shifts behind the scenes, and make outrageous progress without ever breaching 5,000 rpm. We’re not sure if this engine gets better with every drive or whether the competition is simply squeezing out smaller engines with less character, but it’s an exceptionally polished and torque-filled unit.

The steering is wonderfully light and precise, while directional changes and minor adjustments are met with zero resistance. The rear-wheel steering feature pays for itself, allowing the SV to navigate through tight spaces like an Evoque. Even wearing puffy 23-inch wheels, the SV rides exceptionally well, dancing and tiptoeing over the harshest of roads, negotiating them with ample suspension travel to trade.

The options offered by SV Bespoke are startling, and made us privately realize how short-sighted and unimaginative we are. The sheer level of originality to create a one-off model is intimidating. What’s your favourite colour? Teak wood or Japanese cypress? Personal motto? Our creative brain juices are now running on full steam, because when asked if money is no object, we can finally introduce an object worth all the money.
